• Nobles of Null is a forum based roleplay site where sci-fi and magic collide. Here, Earth remains fractured and divided despite humanity reaching out to the stars. Worse still, the trans-human slaves of one major power have escaped, only to establish their own Empire, seething with resentment at abuses of the past. Even the discovery of aliens, though medieval in development, has failed to rally these squabbling children of Earth together with its far darker implications. Worse still, is the discovery of the impossible - magic. Practiced by the alien locals, nearly depleted and therefore rare, its reality warping abilities remains abstract and distant to the general populace. All the while, unseen in the darkness of space, forces from without threaten to press in. For those with eyes opened by insight, it is clear that an era is about to end, and that a new age will dawn.

    Chapter 4: First Trial

Marius opens an eye to see blinking hit indicators popping up around the ship on the monitor and releases the joysticks, all the tension in his body replaced by guilt. He slides downward in his chair, not responding to Alex.

    Chapter 4: First Trial

"Yes...uh...Yes sir." Marius's hands are slick with sweat inside his gloves, gripping the joysticks as he nudges the ship into position. His rapidly narrowing tunnel vision almost helps him focus, he stares down the ship in the display. He's aligned, the coilgun pointed at its target. If he...

    Chapter 4: First Trial

He locked eyes with Alex, gave him a smile and hoped the light reflecting off his helmet visor made his expression harder to read. James seemed similarly preoccupied, Marius decided to not mention the poker game again. For the next hour, Marius waited at his post, trying to quell the shaking in...

    Chapter 4: First Trial

Precisely as he feared, Marius had been given the illustrious task of handling the giant gun. He'd played video games before, a lot of video games in fact, but long nights of call of duty or overwatch didn't make him any more comfortable with guns. He didn't like looking at the things, touching...

    Chapter 4: First Trial

Marius Noble had discovered he hated space travel, and after a week of doing it he'd only become used to zero gravity enough to not feel like throwing up constantly. Sleeping strapped to a bed to avoid floating away, the unfamiliar food of the 24th century, and the constant sensation of not...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

Marius floats over to pat Cindy on the shoulder comfortingly. The fact that someone else among the crew was also visibly out of their element reassured him. "I did! and you know me, and that makes us buddies. So don't sweat it, you're perfectly safe with the rest of us here, and I promise it...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

As soon he'd confirmed KB's work is complete and his assistance no longer needed, Marius was all to happy to return to the inside of the ship, out of the ominous infinite void and get reasonably far from where the giant gun is being fired. He passed through the airlock and back into the ship's...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

"I--" He realizes he's been caught and clears his throat. "I used to be a media historian, I possess a broader scope of perspective than the common man. I've had a lot of jobs, as it so happens." Sitting down and staring at the panel of wires as KB works calms his nerves a bit, and the force...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

"I see." Marius had his suspicions that this was an explanation dumbed down to kindergarten level, but appreciated nonetheless. He peers over the open panel as KB works, thankful for the distraction as he checks to make sure their comm channel is private. "...And I know, right? He's one part...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

"Sure..." He inhales, trying to keep his breathing steady though there's enough oxygen in the suit to sustain even an external panic attack. He shivers as KB speaks again, the shifting tone of their voice distinctly unnerving. He looks through the wire frame, thankfully able to pick out the...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

Their surroundings were soundless, Marius realized, as he accidentally knocked the wire frame against the hull with a shaking hand and watched metal silently impact with metal before he scrambled to pull it back by the cord. Nevertheless, when the robotic voice replied through his ear speakers...

    Chapter 3: Preparations

Living for three decades on a planet with a stable and virtually invariable gravitational force to which the human body is perfectly acclimatized might make a person take gravity for granted. And the thing about taking things for granted is you only really appreciate them when they're gone...

    Chapter 2: Gathering

"Little man?--I have a name." He finishes his drink and signals for another, cringing at Alex's no-survivors decree and mumbling quietly, "Can't we just like, take them ransom then wipe their memories? Is that a thing?...That's probably not a thing." He picks up his datapad on instinct as if...

    Chapter 2: Gathering

Marius looks very grateful indeed as Alex and the bartender come to his rescue. He lowers his hands from a position of surrender slowly and takes a sip of his cocktail, listening. “So wait, the proposal is to get off of the Audentes and run around to take the other ship by surprise in the...

    Chapter 2: Gathering

“If we end up dogfighting with anything out there it’ll mean we’ve either fucked up tremendously, or someone is spending entirely too much money on keeping their rocks safe—Hey can I get one of whatever cocktail he’s having? I don’t know what’s good here.” A dark-haired human man in sunglasses...
